The snippet that compared seven and named none

Our comparison page’s search snippet said “seven hospitality systems” and named none. A searcher types a name, so the description carries all seven now.

We keep a comparison page: one table, HelchPOS against seven other systems, including the two rows where we lose. Every claim about somebody else is read off their own site and dated. The page has been stable for weeks. Its search snippet had not been looked at since it was written, and when we measured it this week it turned out to be describing the page to nobody in particular.

Who searches for a comparison

A person comparing point-of-sale systems does not type seven hospitality systems. They type the name of the one they are looking at, and perhaps the word alternative or versus. The old description read an honest side-by-side of HelchPOS against seven hospitality systems. Honest, yes. Matchable against a single query anyone would ever type, no. It named none of the seven, so a search for any of them had nothing on our page to catch.

Why the title could not carry them

The obvious fix is to put the names in the title. We tried that in an earlier pass and backed it out: seven product names do not fit in the sixty-five characters a result title gets before it is cut, and a truncated list reads worse than no list. The title leads with the category instead, food hall and restaurant POS compared, which carries the two words an earlier audit found missing from most of the site. The comment in the source beside the title says exactly this, so the next pass does not try the same thing again.

That leaves the description, which gets a hundred and sixty characters. The new one spends them on the category, all seven names in one breath, the line about the two rows we lose, and the words every claim dated, because that is still true of the foot of the page and it is the reason the page is worth reading. A hundred and fifty-nine characters. One field changed, with the reasoning written next to it.

What was measured and left alone

The same pass read the four posts we have written about individual rivals. Each title already has the shape of the query itself, HelchPOS vs and the name, and each description opens with the rival’s name. They were not touched. Three of the seven have no post of their own yet. That is a writing job, not a metadata job, and it is on the list rather than in this change. The habit worth keeping from the pass is the first step: read the served page before editing anything, because the thing you remember writing is not always the thing that is being served.
