The form whose only save button was the Enter key

Type a new menu section, tap Done, and nothing was created. Adding only happened on Enter, and the one visible button threw the typed name away.

Open the menu sections sheet, type Drinks into the box marked Add a section, and tap the only button on the sheet, which says Done. The sheet closes. There is no Drinks. A tester filed it as “new section is not added after attempting to create it”, with a recording, and the recording shows exactly that. The sheet was not broken. It was waiting for a keystroke nobody knew to press.

How a form ends up with no button

The box added a section when you pressed Enter. On a keyboard, in the session where it was built, that felt natural and the button felt like clutter. On a tablet, or for anyone who reaches for the obvious control, there was no way to add at all, and the obvious control did the opposite: Done closed the sheet and discarded what was in the box. The product has a rule about this, borrowed from a short list of rules every app should follow: unfinished input is never erased by going back. Done was erasing it.

Three small changes

An Add button beside the box. Enter still works. And Done, with a name still sitting in the box, adds the section rather than losing it, because the person has told you what they want and the only question is which button they expected to press.

While the sheet was open we read the rest of it against the same tester’s rows. The date picker for Available after accepted a date in the past, which reads as “live now”, which is what an empty box already means; it is refused now, on the sheet and at the route, with the way out in the sentence. Move up and Move down changed the order and said nothing; every action on the sheet confirms with a toast now. And the five buttons on each row were different buttons depending on whether the section had a picture or a date, so they did not line up from one row to the next. Every row carries the same five now, with one greyed out when it has nothing to do.

What the recording was worth

The written finding said the section was not created. Read on its own, that sends you to the server, looking for a failed insert. The recording showed a finger tapping Done, and that sent us to the sheet. Ask for the recording. A sentence describes the outcome; a recording shows the path, and the path is where the bug is.
